8 OUT OF 10 DRUMMERS SUFFER  INJURIES

“Action is needed to keep drummers safe,”

says leading medical expert.

“The most dangerous musical instrument is the drums,” said Dr Jaume Rosset i Llobet, Director of the Institute of Physiology andDr Jaume Rosset i Llobet Director of the Institute of Physiology and Medicine of Art-Terrassa Medicine of Art-Terrassa, based in Spain. “85% of drummers sustain an injury and a third will have to cancel a performance or put their career on hold as a result of an injury.”

The constant impact of hitting the drums, the tension when holding on to sweaty sticks and the noise can result in permanent injuries, pain and an inability to even hold a pair of drum sticks. As reported widely in the press, top drummer Phil Collins had difficulty holding his drum sticks due to a spinal injury caused by his drumming posture.

At the Institute of Physiology and Medicine of Art-Terrassa, the focus is on researching the causes and solutions to conditions resulting from the way in which musicians play and perform. Drummers travel to the Institute for help in tackling career-limiting injuries, sustained from their drumming techniques.

“Very pleased with the results”

Over a period of two years, the Institute has been testing the effectiveness of Gig Grips Drumstick Grips in helping drummers to regain their ability to grip their sticks and play again. Dr Rosset has seen a positive improvement in the drummers who have used Gig Grips. “Everybody needs some time to adapt to this aid. Some drummers adapt in a few days. We have used Gig Grips for those patients who need to reduce the grip force used to play, such as those with traumatic hand injuries or over-use symptoms. We are very pleased with the results and will continue using Gig Grips with our patients.”
